BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT WERE:

President: Ed Yeash

Vice President: Richard Jackson

Treasurer, Robert (Capt. Morgan) Brooks; (Absent)

Secretary: Elaine Jackson

Safety Officer: Dave Brown

Field Officer: Mike McGee (Absent)

Members at Large: Bob Mason, Roy Leopold (Absent), Bill Evans

There were 23 members and 7 wives and 2 guest present.

NEW MEMBERS/ GUEST:

There were two potential new members at tonight’s meeting; Tom Lehmbecker and Andrew Jennings.

Andrew is requesting to join the club so he can use the field at night to take time release pictures of the sky using a telescopic camera. Since our by-laws require all members to be members of the AMA, he has agreed to join AMA as well.

MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING:

The minutes from the July meeting were accepted by the members present.

TREASURERS REPORT:

The July treasurer’s report was accepted as presented in the absence of the Treasurer.

SAFETY REPORT:

If you have a battery that looks “puffy” get rid of it, it is dangerous. These can catch fire or explode doing damage to whatever they are near. Dave Brown brought in some samples of batteries that had exploded or burned to show around. Batteries are not that expensive. Get rid of the old and replace them with new.

FIELD MAINTENANCE REPORT:

Mike McGee was absent so we did not have a report on the field conditions.

TRAINING:

Ed has an entry pilot student named Roy Gonzales that he is working with. Juan has three flights under his belt but because of the daily rain showers they have not been able to fly most afternoons..

Robert Goldsbury’s student, James has finished his training and can now solo.

OLD BUSINESS:

The Young Eagles program that was supposed to be in August keeps getting changed because of the various groups involved. When we receive more information it will be brought to the club.

The STEM program at Camp Ho-non-wa is scheduled for October 12th. We will be able to fly small aircraft as a demonstration. We will also have the simulators there to let the Scouts try their hand at “flying”.  One of the projects we do is give each camper a foam airplane to put together and fly. We need volunteers to help cut out the planes.

NEW BUSINESS:

The question was raised about whether the club wants to have a Fall Picnic at the field. Bob Mason made a motion to have this event. We need to decide on a date sometime during October or November. Shawn Mason said he will check his calendar to see what weekend he would be available to do the cooking and let us know at the next meeting.

The Tractor Pull is scheduled for November 16. The Charleston Model Train show is also scheduled for that weekend.

The Flying Tigers RC Club will be hosting their “Event of the Year” on September 6 & 7.

SHOW AND TELL:

Ken Becker brought in a chunk of concrete that Jack Jessop had donated to the Carolina Fun Flyers as a Flag Holder. Since the Carolina Fun Flyers no longer have a field, Ken brought in this item in memory of Jack, which our club accepted. A place at the field will be found for it, possibly near the fence coming into the field.. (Note of interest: Bob Mason, Mr. Bailey and Jack Jessop were all in the same squadron during the Vietnam War.)

RAFFLE TICKETS:

Raffle tickets are still being sold for the 76 inch wingspan Laser 200 Aeroworks plane built by Bill Tuxworth. The drawing will be at the December meeting. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00.

CRASH OF THE MONTH:

Ken Becker said he had a Calypso Glider that went into the trees as he was trying to land it. When they went into the woods to look for it they found it on the ground with only one hole in the wing and a loose tail. The cause of the “crash” was a loose terminal on the battery. It had not been soldered. The repairs were quickly done and it was back in the air.

Since no one else admitted to having a crash, Ken Becker was awarded by acclimation.

MEETING ADJOURNED:

Meeting adjourned at 7:36 PM. Next meeting will be on September 2nd, 2019 at Perkins Restaurant located at 1700 Trolley Road, Summerville, SC.
